Abstract

The objective of writing this review on hydrodynamically balanced systems (HBS) was collection of the recent literature. The design of hydrodynamically balanced drug delivery system is base on prolong GI residence time of drug in an area of the GI tract to maximize drug reaching its absorption. Gastrointestinal transit time of orally administered dosage forms are controlled by using gastro retentive drug delivery systems (GRDDS). Need for GRDDS a controlled drug delivery system with prolonged residence time in the stomach. Floating drug delivery systems is one of the important approaches to achieve gastric retention to obtain sufficient drug bioavailability. This delivery system is desirable for drugs with an absorption window in the stomach or in the upper small intestine
