ROLE OF NATURAL POLYMERS USED IN FLOATING DRUG DELIVERY SYSTEM

Floating drug delivery system is the form of gastro-retentive drug delivery system that controls the kinetic release rate of a drug to a specific site for its pharmacological action. These are achieved by use of various polymeric substance including natural polymers such as Guar Gum, Xanthan Gum, Gellan Gum etc. This delivery system prolongs the retention time of the drug in the stomach as compared to conventional dosage forms. The present article highlights the use of polymers for the formulation of the floating drug delivery system especially with natural polymers.
